So happy he wasn’t actually retiring ♥
Upon closer inspection of the MV, my sisters and I have more reason to believe that their original concept involved drowning Romeo!Woohyun, leading to its being re-edited (and the sorta awkward drama section). In addition to what was already discussed earlier in this post, check out this other backdrop during the dance scenes:
I can get why this wasn’t taken out of the video. From afar, it’s easy to overlook that the buildings at the back are actually SUBMERGED IN WATER, aside from being in total disarray. This ties in pretty well with the established idea that Romeo!Woohyun met his end in a freak drowning accident in his attempt to be with his Juliet (a bit like the actual literary Romeo who willingly got himself killed).
No wonder they had to re-edit, it would have been awful alongside the actual accident.
So my sisters and I were watching Infinite’s Last Romeo MV (awesome song btw, great comeback!) and we couldn’t help but think about how it connects to Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet since Woollim actually used Leonardo DiCaprio’s face as a teaser way way back.
The MV is a standard dance + drama sort of thing, with Woohyun chasing some girl around and going crazy while doing so. On the surface, it looks like all the kpop boyband cliches rolled into one. Sure, it looks slick and the boys look hot but we’ve seen this type of thing in a lot of MVs already. And this scene in particular was super cheesy and lol-worthy:
(lol dude, just go to the other side of the book case)
We like to believe that somehow, there is something creative and symbolic going on so we decided to overanalyze and force some connections! So here, notice how the set design during the dance scenes here
kind of resemble Juliet’s wake over here
Also, we can’t help but think that the stupid scene where Woohyun and the girl reach for each other through the book cases was supposed to be done differently. Perhaps through a clear barrier that one really can’t slip their arms through, like, I don’t know, a FISH TANK:
I know that it sounds like we’re pushing it but think about it: Infinite’s comeback was delayed because they had to reshoot their MV because they had too many scenes with water (and probably dying in water) which calls back to the recent ferry tragedy in Korea. They probably kept all the dance scenes but had to reshoot the entire “drama” part where water was a more prominent element. We all know that Romeo dies in the end (the song lyrics even reference this) so it’s possible that instead of the earthquake + exploding library scene, Romeo!Woohyun could have perished in a flooded warehouse/aquarium complex in his attempt to find/join Juliet.
While it was a good decision on Woollim’s part to take out all the water in the MV in light of what happened, it probably removed all the symbolism and references to the original Romeo and Juliet story and the 1996 movie. I hope we’ll get an idea of how it was supposed to be someday!
It just doesn’t feel like it.
I guess that’s what you get for turning many friends into enemies so close to your birthday.
I really want to get into The Flash and Green Lantern but I really don’t know what to start reading. I’ve read them in other series (Batman, Justice League and the Brave and the Bold come to mind) but I want to get to know them more in their own books.
Any recommendations for a first-time reader? I usually like reading origin stories first but any good story that can stand alone without requiring me to do much background research would be great too!
